[07-21-25] 12-Year-Old Boy on Scooter Dies After Being Struck by Car in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. — Aurora police said a 12-year-old boy on a scooter was struck and killed by a 19-year-old driver as the boy was crossing a lighted intersection Saturday morning.

The boy was using a marked crosswalk and activated the crossing signal at E. Iliff Avenue near S. Wheel Park Circle at the time of the crash, according to police.

Police said the 19-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on E. Iliff Avenue and failed to stop for the signal because the teen “was not paying attention.”

The boy was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. His identity has not been released.

The driver remained at the scene. It’s not clear what charges the driver is facing.

Flowers now line the street in memory of the 12-year-old boy as the community mourns.

“It’s just, it’s just too bad. It’s just absolutely crazy,” said Russell Anderson, who’s lived in the community for nearly 50 years.

He told Denver7 that many in the area are concerned about people speeding, running red lights, and engaging in overall reckless driving.

“During the summer months, teen fatalities spiked by about 14% over the average throughout the year. We lose nationwide about eight teens on our roads every day during the summer months, eight young people, and one of the big reasons for that is distraction,” said David Reich with the National Road Safety Foundation.

The NRSF encourages parents to discuss safe driving practices with their children this summer.

“We have something called the Passport to Safe Driving, which helps parents talk to their kids. It has got a lot of good talking points, ways to have that discussion about being a safe and careful driver,” said Reich.

As the Aurora community mourns the tragedy, neighbors like Anderson say they want to see more enforcement efforts.

“I’ve never seen any police on Iliff just sitting and policing speeders. I’ve seen them on Yale and Peoria, but I haven’t seen them on Iliff,” he said. “There’s a perfect spot right there, going into Wheel Park, where they could park and catch people.”

Denver7 reached out to the Aurora Police Department, but they were not available for comment on Sunday.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle accidents are seldom a minor occurrence. In fact, they are some of the most dangerous types of road accidents. They usually occur at high speeds and result in severe injury or death.

Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable and prone to be ejected from their motorcycle in an accident. According to the NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Guide, motorcyclists are four times more likely to sustain injuries in an accident than other vehicle operators and 29 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle collision than passengers in a car or truck. Common injuries from motorcycle collisions include serious head injuries, back injuries, and broken bones.

Year after year, motorcyclists continue to overrepresent crash fatalities. Motorcycle injuries and accident statistics serve as a sobering reminder for all drivers to use caution. Here is a look at some statistics reflecting motorcycle accidents in the US and Colorado. Based on the information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Colorado’s Motorcycle Operator Safety Training Program (MOST), and KKTV:

  • The US had 5,458 motorcycle fatalities in 2020, a 9% increase from 2019 and the highest number of motorcycle fatalities ever recorded.
  • 2020 was also a record year for motorcycle fatalities in Colorado
  • Colorado observed:
    • 72 motorcycle-related deaths in January-June 2020
    • 59 motorcycle-related deaths in January-June 2021
  • Motorcycle-related crash fatalities account for 17% of all motor vehicle crash casualties in Colorado.
  • 80% of motorcycle crashes result in severe injuries
  • Head-on and rear-end collisions are the most common motorcycle crashes, accounting for 74% of all motorcycle crashes.
  • 63% of motorcycle accident victims were not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred
  • In 2019, Colorado observed 103 motorcyclist fatalities
    • 92 were male
    • 11 were female
    • 93 were motorcycle operators
    • 10 were motorcycle passengers

While they only make up 3% of registered vehicles in Colorado, they account for 23% of traffic fatalities in 2020. Motorcyclists accounted for 137 out of 622 traffic fatalities in Colorado in 2020.

Many different contributing factors can lead to motorcycle accidents. The most common causes are driving under the influence, speeding, lack of proper training, failure to wear a helmet, and driver negligence.
