DENVER (KDVR) — A suspect has been arrested after a 16-year-old boy died after being struck by a car while riding an electric scooter in Aurora late Friday evening.
The Aurora Police Department said to FOX31 that Daveon Javon-James Jackson, 19, was arrested shortly before 7 p.m. on Saturday by members of the department’s Traffic Investigations Unit.
APD said they initially responded at 11:18 p.m. on Friday to a report of a hit-and-run crash at East Wesley Drive and South Dunkirk Street. When they got onto the scene, a 16-year-old boy was initially conscious and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
APD said the teen’s condition “declined rapidly” at the hospital and that he died shortly after arriving.
A preliminary investigation determined the teen was on an electric scooter traveling north in the marked bicycle lane on East Wesley Drive approaching South Dunkirk Street, when he was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle traveling the same direction, police said.
APD said the suspected vehicle sped from the area and likely traveled north on South Dunkirk Street towards East Jewell Avenue.
Residents did, however, report to police that they heard a vehicle with a loud exhaust speeding from the scene of the crash at around the same time the incident occurred, according to APD.
FOX31 spoke to neighborhood resident Adrian Compos, who said he heard a loud bang that made him rush outside to find out what was going on, where he says he found a boy lying in the street.
“It was just a hectic scene because a lot of people were trying to do so many different things. But I was just trying to make sure he was okay, because I seen him start going out of it,” Compos said.
Compos, who told Dean he almost “dropped to the floor” after encountering the victim, said he has had to talk to his kids about the dangers of the road behind his house.
“I tell him, it’s not what you do. It’s what the other drivers do. The drivers don’t pay attention. They’re texting, speeding. It’s very dangerous, you know,” Compos said.
APD said to FOX31 on Saturday that Jackson is being booked and facing charges for “leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, a felony, as well as careless driving resulting in death, hit-and-run and failing to report a crash to police, traffic infractions.”
The police department said they received many tips from community members, which “ultimately helped” police identify the suspect vehicle and develop leads resulting in an arrest.
