[08-27-26] Two Drivers Hurt in Crash at 40th and Peña Near DIA

Two motorists suffered serious injuries Tuesday evening in a crash at East 40th Avenue and Peña Boulevard, one of the busiest and most hazard-prone gateways to Denver International Airport. Denver Police said the crash was under investigation and warned drivers to expect delays in the area.

The department announced the crash in a Crash Alert posted to social media just before 8 p.m., according to the Denver Police Dept., which said the collision involved two motorists and resulted in serious injuries. Denver Police only issues these public alerts when at least one person involved sustains serious injuries or the crash forces a road closure — a threshold the department has said excludes routine fender-benders and property-damage-only wrecks.

A Corridor With a Troubled Safety History

The 40th Avenue and Peña Boulevard interchange has seen deadly collisions before. In July 2022, a driver struck and killed a victim at the same intersection before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to a report at the time from 9News. That history underscores how the junction mixes heavy local commercial traffic with high-speed airport access lanes.

The interchange also functions as a critical transit and commercial gateway, linking the RTD A Line’s Gateway Park Station to a stretch of airport hotels and major logistics hubs including the 355-acre High Point district, Hoodline has reported. Rapid commercial and industrial growth along East 40th Avenue has added heavy vehicle and hotel shuttle traffic to the ramps feeding Peña Boulevard, making the intersection a convergence point for commuters, freight haulers, and airport travelers alike.

Peña Boulevard’s Traffic Has Outgrown Its Design

Built in 1993, the 11.1-mile Peña Boulevard now carries more than 139,000 vehicles per day, an 80 percent increase since the airport opened three decades ago, according to Denver International Airport. That surge in volume has produced elevated crash rates, persistent delays, and geometric safety conditions that predate the corridor’s current traffic load — a mismatch the airport is currently studying through a multi-year federal environmental review process aimed at major safety and capacity upgrades.

Airport officials have already begun addressing some of those risks. The Peña Boulevard Phase 1B modernization project earned Envision Silver verification in 2026 for safety upgrades including wider shoulders, new merge and diverge lanes, and updated LED street lighting, per the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The corridor has also proven vulnerable to mass-casualty events: a 30-vehicle pileup near 56th Avenue during a February snowstorm injured 14 people and forced airport-bound traffic onto detour routes like Tower Road and Green Valley Ranch Boulevard, Denver Police said at the time.

Part of a Record Year for Traffic Deaths

Tuesday’s crash adds to a grim regional pattern. The Denver Regional Council of Governments recorded 9,608 fatal or severe-injury crashes across the metro area between 2020 and 2024, resulting in 1,564 deaths and more than 9,500 serious injuries — a more than 30 percent rise in fatalities that prompted the region to adopt Vision Zero targets for 2040. Denver itself logged a record 90 traffic deaths in 2025 across drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, the city’s highest annual toll since at least 2013, as Westword has reported.

Under Colorado law, drivers involved in injury collisions are required to stop immediately, remain at the scene, exchange identification, and render reasonable assistance, including arranging medical transport, per state statutes C.R.S. 42-4-1601 and 42-4-1603. Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury is a Class 4 felony punishable by up to six years in prison under Colorado law. It remains unknown whether speed, red-light running, or impairment played a role in Tuesday’s crash, or whether either driver could face charges; Denver Police have not released those details.

Full investigative findings, including any determination of fault, are not expected soon. Denver Police reports on serious-injury crashes typically take five to seven business days to finalize once the investigation closes, and must be formally requested through the department’s Civil Liability Section before release to insurers or the public. The exact condition of both motorists involved in Tuesday’s crash has not been disclosed.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents continue to cause thousands of deaths and serious injuries across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024.

Colorado also continues to see hundreds of traffic deaths each year. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 684 people were killed on Colorado roads in 2024. Of those deaths, 371 involved passenger vehicle occupants.

Denver drivers face additional risks on heavily traveled arterial roads. Corridors such as Colfax Avenue and Federal Boulevard have been identified as part of Denver’s High Injury Network, which includes streets with some of the city’s highest concentrations of fatal and serious-injury crashes.

Car accidents can involve two vehicles, several vehicles, pedestrians, motorcycles, or commercial trucks. Multi-vehicle crashes can become especially complicated because several drivers may share responsibility and multiple insurance policies may apply.

Common factors that can contribute to serious car accidents include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Reckless or aggressive driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Failure to yield
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to obey traffic signals
  • Dangerous weather or road conditions

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash, a Denver car accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine which parties and insurance policies may be responsible.
