[05-26-26] Deadly 96th Avenue Truck Crash Claims 58-Year-Old Pedestrian in Commerce City

A 58-year-old pedestrian struck by a truck on East 96th Avenue in Commerce City has died after being hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. Emergency crews shut down E. 96th Avenue between Chambers Road and Buckley Road while medics treated the victim and investigators documented the crash scene. The death was confirmed after the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital and later died over the weekend.

Police update and investigation

According to the Commerce City Police Department, the truck driver stayed at the scene, spoke with officers, and is cooperating with the investigation. Police said the driver will not be cited or face any charges. The CCPD Traffic Team is handling the truck and pedestrian collision, and officers urged drivers to steer clear of the area while the lanes were closed during the initial response and early stages of the investigation.

Where the crash happened

The collision occurred along a stretch of E. 96th Avenue that is currently under construction as part of a city widening project that will add travel lanes, sidewalks, and multi‑use paths between Chambers Road and Tower Road. The project page for the corridor describes phased lane closures and traffic signal work that have shifted how vehicles move through the area while crews finish the Second Creek bridge and other upgrades, as per the E. 96th Avenue Widening Project.

Pedestrian safety in Colorado

Statewide numbers put the tragedy in a wider context. In a 2024 update, the Colorado Department of Transportation reported 47 pedestrian deaths in the first half of that year and stressed that crashes are not random events and can be prevented. The agency highlights infrastructure improvements, traffic enforcement, and safer driver behavior as key tools to bring those numbers down.

What’s next

CCPD says its Traffic Team is continuing to investigate as the department collects evidence and prepares a full report on the fatal collision. For now, the department’s Facebook post is the main public account of what happened, and officials say they will release additional details as they are able to share them, according to the Commerce City Police Department.

DENVER TRUCK ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Large truck crashes can cause devastating injuries because of the size and weight differences between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 5,340 people died in crashes involving large trucks nationwide in 2024. Passenger vehicle occupants accounted for 62% of those deaths, while 17% were large truck occupants and 19% were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists.

Large trucks also require more distance to stop than passenger vehicles. IIHS reports that loaded tractor-trailers can need 20% to 40% more stopping distance than cars. The difference can be even greater on wet or slippery roads.

Colorado also continues to see hundreds of fatal crashes each year. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 689 people were killed on Colorado roads in 2024. Commercial trucks share many of the state’s busiest highways, including I-70, where steep grades and mountain conditions can create additional risks for large vehicles.

Denver-area drivers regularly share major highways with commercial trucks traveling through Colorado. In 2024, CDOT reopened the rebuilt Mount Vernon emergency escape ramp on eastbound I-70 near Genesee. The ramp is designed to help truck drivers experiencing failed brakes or other mechanical emergencies while descending toward the Denver region.

Common factors that can contribute to serious truck accidents include:

  • Speeding or driving too fast for conditions
  • Driver fatigue
  • Distracted driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Improperly maintained brakes or tires
  • Overloaded or improperly secured cargo
  • Failure to account for road or weather conditions
  • Inadequate driver training
  • Impaired driving

Truck accident cases can also involve several potentially responsible parties. Depending on the circumstances, responsibility may extend beyond the driver to the trucking company, vehicle owner, maintenance provider, cargo company, or another party.

Common injuries in serious truck crashes can include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, fractures, burns, amputations, internal injuries, scarring, disfigurement, and paralysis.

DENVER TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS

Colorado’s mountain roads create unique risks for commercial vehicles. Long and steep descents can place heavy demands on truck braking systems, particularly along the I-70 Mountain Corridor.

CDOT maintains emergency escape ramps and brake-cooling areas along I-70 to help commercial drivers manage these conditions. The Mount Vernon escape ramp was rebuilt in 2024 with improvements designed to make it easier for truck drivers to see and enter during an emergency.

These conditions can make truck crashes in and around Denver especially complicated. Investigations may involve driver records, electronic logging data, maintenance records, cargo information, vehicle inspections, and evidence from the trucking company.
