[08-13-26] Hit-And-Run Driver Leaves Cyclist Badly Hurt Near Knox Court

A bicyclist was left with serious injuries Monday night after a motorist struck them and fled the scene near West 13th Avenue and North Knox Court in West Denver. The Denver Police Department is now investigating the crash and warned that traffic delays were possible in the area as officers worked the scene.

According to a Denver Police Dept. post, the crash involved a motorist and a bicyclist and resulted in serious injuries, though the driver did not remain at the scene. Police did not release a suspect vehicle description or the current medical condition of the injured cyclist in the alert, leaving those details as open questions for now.

Why Denver Police Issue Public Crash Alerts

Not every collision in Denver generates a public notice. The department has stated that it only issues a Crash Alert when at least one person involved sustains serious injuries or when the crash results in road closures, and it has cautioned that its social media account is not monitored around the clock. That threshold signals the severity of Monday’s crash near Knox Court.

Colorado law treats fleeing the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury as a serious criminal matter. Under state statute, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious injury is a Class 4 felony carrying two to six years in prison, fines of up to $500,000, and driver’s license revocation, according to the Colorado Legal Defense Group. Separate statutes require any driver involved in an injury collision to stop immediately, exchange information, and render reasonable assistance, including calling for medical transport, as outlined by the Peakstone Law Group.

A Corridor With a History of Danger

Knox Court has particular significance for cyclists in West Denver. City planning documents identify it as a primary north-south bicycle corridor, with West 13th Avenue designated as a shared bicycle roadway serving the West Colfax and Sun Valley neighborhoods, per the City and County of Denver’s West Area Plan.

The intersection sits just blocks from where a 13-year-old e-bike rider was struck and killed in 2024 at West Colfax Avenue and Knox Court, a crash that Hoodline’s earlier reporting on a mother’s fight for street safety noted sparked neighborhood protests and demands for stricter street safety measures. Monday’s crash adds to a string of recent serious bicyclist collisions in Denver, including a July hit-and-run on Leetsdale Drive that left a cyclist with serious bodily injuries and a May crash near Washington Park that also triggered a police crash alert.

Fleeing Drivers Rely on Tips and Cameras to Get Caught

Denver Police investigate hit-and-run crashes through a specialized Traffic Investigations Unit that processes hundreds of cases monthly using video surveillance, Crime Stoppers tips, and body shop alert networks, according to the Denver DUI Attorney Blog. That approach has helped identify fleeing drivers in past cases, even when no suspect description is immediately available to the public.

The crash also lands amid a grim citywide backdrop. City traffic records show 93 people died in Denver traffic collisions in 2025, the highest annual total since 2013 despite the city’s Vision Zero safety initiatives, the Denver Gazette reported. Statewide, Colorado Department of Transportation data recorded 701 total traffic fatalities in 2025, including 126 pedestrian deaths and 18 bicyclist fatalities, marking roughly a 2 percent increase over 2024.

Regionally, the Denver Regional Council of Governments recorded 812 crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists across the metro area in 2024, resulting in 84 fatalities. Whether the city plans any specific engineering safety interventions at West 13th Avenue and Knox Court remains unknown. Denver Police have not released further updates on the investigation or the injured bicyclist’s condition since issuing the crash alert.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents because riders have little protection when a collision occurs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Motorcyclists accounted for 16% of all traffic fatalities that year.

The risks are especially significant in Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 165 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roads in 2024, the highest number ever recorded in the state. Motorcycle fatalities accounted for nearly one-quarter of all Colorado traffic deaths, even though motorcycles represented only about 3% of registered vehicles.

Colorado also recorded 774 serious bodily injury crashes involving motorcycles in 2024. Of the motorcyclists killed that year, 44% were not wearing a helmet.

Motorcycle deaths declined in 2025, when Colorado recorded 148 fatalities. Even with that decrease, motorcycle crashes remain a significant safety concern across the state.

Denver riders face many of the same risks as motorcyclists throughout Colorado, particularly on busy urban roads and highways. Common factors that can contribute to motorcycle crashes include:

  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Failure to yield
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Drivers failing to see a motorcycle
  • Dangerous road or weather conditions
  • Inexperienced or unsafe riding

Colorado also allows limited motorcycle lane filtering under a law that took effect in 2024. Motorcyclists may pass between vehicles under certain conditions when surrounding traffic is stopped. Lane splitting between moving vehicles remains illegal.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle crash, a Denver motorcycle accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine who may be responsible.
