A crash involving two motorists near East 45th Avenue and Tower Road sent one person to the hospital with serious injuries early Tuesday, prompting Denver police to urge drivers to find alternate routes through the Far Northeast Denver corridor. The collision occurred at an intersection that sits along one of the city’s busiest arteries feeding traffic toward Denver International Airport.

According to the Denver Police Dept., officers were called to investigate the crash near East 45th Avenue and Tower Road, where two motorists were involved, and at least one person sustained serious injuries requiring hospital transport. The department posted its alert just before 4 a.m. Tuesday and advised the public to avoid the area while crews worked the scene.

Department policy limits these public Crash Alerts to incidents involving serious bodily injury or full road closures, meaning routine fender-benders without severe injury typically don’t generate a public notice at all. That threshold is why this crash, rather than the hundreds of minor collisions that occur across Denver each month, drew an official alert. The department also directs residents to crash data it maintains on Denver’s Open Data Catalog for those tracking citywide trends.

A Corridor With A Documented Safety Problem

Tuesday’s crash adds to a troubling pattern along this stretch of Tower Road. A City and County of Denver Vision Zero Road Safety Audit examined crash data along Tower Road South from East 45th Avenue to 56th Avenue between April 2019 and March 2024 and recorded 278 total crashes and 11 serious injury crashes, though zero fatalities, in that span. The audit found that broadside collisions were the most frequent severe crash type in the corridor, accounting for 64% of serious injuries, and identified left-turn maneuvers and speed as significant safety factors.

The intersection has also seen trouble more recently. A multi-vehicle incident occurred at North Tower Road and East 45th Avenue on November 23, 2025, involving a northbound pickup truck turning left and a stopped vehicle, an incident officers investigated for potential driving under the influence, according to the O’Sullivan Law Firm. Tower Road serves as a major arterial connecting Far Northeast Denver neighborhoods, including Gateway and Green Valley Ranch, with the airport, which helps explain the persistent traffic volume through the area.

Regional planners have taken notice of the capacity strain here. The Denver Regional Council of Governments’ 2050 Regional Transportation Plan allocated $2.5 million to widen Tower Road from four to six lanes between 45th Avenue and Green Valley Ranch Boulevard, an investment aimed at expanding capacity along the same stretch where Tuesday’s crash occurred.

Part Of A Grim Citywide Trend

This crash lands amid a broader surge in Denver traffic deaths. The city recorded 93 traffic fatalities on its streets in 2025, the highest annual death toll since Denver launched its Vision Zero safety initiative in 2017, according to the Flesch Law Firm. That figure marked an increase from 80 deaths in 2024 despite the city’s ongoing safety pledges. As of mid-June 2026, Denver’s own Vision Zero tracking had already logged 29 traffic fatalities on city roadways for the year, per Barchart.

The pattern has drawn sharp criticism from local advocates. In January, a coalition including Denver Streets Partnership and Denver Bicycle Lobby gave Denver’s mayor a D grade for transportation safety, pointing to more than 200 roadway deaths in the city since mid-2023. The coalition noted that traffic crashes have claimed more lives in Denver than homicides, a comparison meant to underscore the scale of the problem even as infrastructure fixes lag. Across the wider metro area, traffic fatalities rose by more than 30% between 2020 and 2024, with 9,608 fatal or severe-injury crashes producing 1,564 deaths regionally, according to the Denver Regional Council of Governments, which has set a goal of eliminating regional traffic deaths by 2040.

Potential Legal Exposure For Careless Driving

It remains unclear what caused Tuesday’s collision or whether either driver will face charges, but Colorado law lays out specific penalties for cases where careless driving leads to serious injury. Under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-1402, careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury is a Class 1 misdemeanor traffic offense punishable by up to 12 months in jail, fines of up to $1,000, and four points on a driver’s license. State law defines serious bodily injury as harm carrying a substantial risk of death, disfigurement, or impairment of an organ.

Colorado also toughened administrative consequences last year. Senate Bill 25-281, enacted in 2025, allows state authorities to suspend a driver’s license for up to one year following a conviction for careless driving that results in serious bodily injury or death. The same law introduced mandatory license revocations for vehicular homicide convictions, according to Colorado Capitol Watch.

Tuesday’s crash follows other recent serious-injury collisions Hoodline has tracked along Tower Road near DIA, including a pedestrian struck earlier this month, as well as a two-vehicle wreck on East 17th Avenue and a fatal crash near 56th and Peña in January. The condition of the person hospitalized Tuesday has not been released, and Denver police have not yet indicated whether speed, impairment, or another factor contributed to the crash.
