Denver police are investigating a crash in the 5000 block of North Kalamath Street that left a pedestrian with serious injuries this morning. The crash, which occurred in the Chaffee Park neighborhood, involved a motorist and a pedestrian, according to a crash alert posted just after 8:25 a.m.
The Denver Police Dept. said officers responded to the scene and are actively investigating the collision. The department only issues public crash alerts when at least one person involved sustains serious injuries or the crash causes road closures, and this incident met that threshold. Police have not yet released details on the pedestrian’s current medical condition, the identity of those involved, or whether the driver remained at the scene.
This marks the third serious pedestrian crash on North Kalamath Street since the start of the year. Just 11 days earlier, on August 10, a driver struck a pedestrian and fled the scene on the adjacent 4900 block of North Kalamath Street, leaving that victim seriously injured, as Hoodline reported. That case remains part of an active investigation, and a follow-up report detailed how the Denver Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit was searching for a black Toyota SUV believed to be connected to the hit-and-run.
A Corridor With a Deadly Track Record
Back in January, a 19-year-old pedestrian was killed on North Kalamath Street near West 11th Avenue by a driver estimated to have been traveling 100 mph. Police later arrested a 29-year-old Lakewood man in connection with that fatal hit-and-run, according to prior Hoodline coverage. The stretch of Kalamath Street running through North Denver functions as a multi-lane arterial near the Interstate 70 interchange, carrying heavy commuter traffic through residential blocks.
That history is not coincidental. Kalamath Street is part of Denver’s High Injury Network, a designation for arterial roads that make up just 5% of the city’s street mileage but account for more than half of all traffic fatalities citywide, per the City and County of Denver. The city uses that network data to prioritize road safety audits and traffic calming projects, though it remains an open question whether any such improvements are planned specifically for this stretch of Kalamath.
Denver’s Worsening Traffic Death Toll
Saturday’s crash lands amid a citywide surge in road fatalities. Denver recorded 93 traffic deaths in 2025, its highest annual total since 2013 and since the city joined the national Vision Zero safety initiative in 2017, according to Axios. That figure marked a jump from 80 deaths the year before.
Pedestrians have borne a disproportionate share of that increase. Pedestrian fatalities in Denver rose more than 50% in 2025, reaching 25 deaths through late September compared to 16 over the same period in 2024, Colorado Politics reported. The trend extends beyond city limits — regional data from the Denver Regional Council of Governments showed traffic fatalities and severe injuries across the metro area climbed more than 30% between 2020 and 2024, totaling 1,564 deaths and over 9,500 serious injuries.
What Colorado Law Requires — and Penalizes
Under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-802, drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks when no traffic signal is present, and failing to do so can result in citations or civil liability. If a driver flees the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury, C.R.S. § 42-4-1601 classifies that as a Class 4 felony punishable by two to six years in prison and fines up to $500,000, with a conviction also triggering mandatory license revocation by the Colorado DMV.
Severe crash investigations like this one fall to the Denver Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit, which logs more than 400 hit-and-run cases each month and works with regional auto body repair shops to help track down suspect vehicles.
