[08-22-26] Montbello Pedestrian Hospitalized in Peoria Street Crash, Fourth Serious Wreck in Days

A pedestrian was rushed to the hospital Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle near North Peoria Street and East 47th Avenue in Montbello, marking the second serious crash on this stretch of road in less than a week. The driver stayed at the scene, and police warned of delays as investigators worked the intersection.

Denver Police Dept. issued a Crash Alert describing a traffic crash involving a pedestrian and a motorist that resulted in serious injury, according to a post from Denver Police Dept. One person was transported to the hospital, and the driver remained on scene, the department said. Police advised motorists to expect delays in the area and to use alternate routes.

It remains unclear whether the pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk, whether speed or impairment played a role, or whether any citations will follow. Those questions are expected to be addressed as the department’s investigation continues.

A Corridor Already Marked for Danger

This is not the first serious wreck on North Peoria Street this month. Just four days earlier, Denver Police investigated a crash at East 39th Avenue and North Peoria Street that killed a motorist on August 15, a case Hoodline previously covered. That incident also triggered a formal DPD Crash Alert.

North Peoria Street is part of Denver’s High Injury Network, a designation the city applies to the roughly 5% of streets where half of all traffic fatalities and serious injuries occur, according to the City and County of Denver. The stretch near Interstate 70 is especially crash-heavy: the I-70 westbound and North Peoria Street junction recorded six serious injuries in 2025 and more than 100 collisions in 2024, per data cited by Chalat Law, an accident law firm that tracks Denver crash statistics.

Denver Public Works lowered the posted speed limit on North Peoria Street between East 47th Avenue and East 39th Avenue from 40 mph to 35 mph back in August 2019 as part of a corridor safety push, according to reporting at the time. Under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-802, drivers must stop and yield to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections without functioning signals, while pedestrians crossing outside designated crosswalks are required to yield to oncoming traffic.

Denver’s Deadliest Year for Traffic Deaths

The Montbello crash lands amid a citywide surge in traffic fatalities. Denver recorded 93 traffic deaths in 2025, its deadliest year since Vision Zero tracking began, up from 80 in 2024, and the city had already logged 42 traffic deaths by mid-August 2026, according to the City and County of Denver. Pedestrian fatalities jumped 50% year-over-year in 2025, with 25 pedestrians killed through September compared to 16 during the same period in 2024, per the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, as reported by Colorado Politics. City officials attributed the rise to driver speed, impairment, and visibility issues.

A coalition including the Denver Streets Partnership gave Mayor Mike Johnston a D grade on transportation safety in January, citing more than 200 traffic deaths since mid-2023 and noting that traffic crashes now claim more lives in Denver than homicides. Advocates in that report expressed concern over delayed road-safety projects and reallocated infrastructure funding.

The intersection sits within Denver Police District 5, which opened a new $19 million, 32,000-square-foot headquarters at 12025 East 45th Avenue in Montbello in December 2023, replacing an overcrowded former station that had sat on Peoria Street itself. Colorado law also requires drivers involved in a crash resulting in serious bodily injury to remain at the scene; fleeing such a crash is a Class 4 felony carrying potential prison time and license revocation under state statute. Denver Police Dept. confirmed the driver in Wednesday’s crash complied with that requirement and stayed on scene.

DENVER PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian deaths from traffic crashes in the United States are at a 30-year high. And while Colorado is not among the Top 10 or even Top 20 states for the most pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents in the country, it still has its fair share of serious injuries and fatalities as a result of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Colorado ranked #33 in 2019 (latest data available).

Between January 1 and April 18, 2022, Denver alone has seen ninety-three (93) auto/pedestrian accidents resulting in serious bodily injuries. And sadly, during this time period, an additional fifteen (15) people lost their lives when struck by a vehicle while walking in Denver. Last year there were ninety-one pedestrian fatalities in Colorado: more than 13% of all Colorado roadway fatalities.

In 2020, motor-vehicle crashes with pedestrian fatalities were the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable roadway users. Visibility sharply declines in the evenings and at night, so it is no surprise that most pedestrian/vehicle collisions happen in the evening or during low-light conditions.

With numbers like these, the chances of you or a loved one being a victim of a pedestrian/vehicle collision are high. All car accidents have the potential to result in serious injuries, but none more so than a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Without any protection to the body, even the smallest impact from a vehicle can cause significant, even life-changing injuries, or even death. If you or a loved one has been a victim of a pedestrian/vehicle collision, you should seek legal advice to understand your rights to recover the compensation you deserve.
