[08-26-26] Pedestrian Seriously Hurt in Crash Near Coors Field, Denver’s Fifth This Month

A motorist and a pedestrian collided at the intersection of 22nd Street and Blake Street in Denver’s Ballpark district early Sunday morning, leaving the pedestrian with serious injuries, according to police. Officers responded to the crash near Coors Field and are still investigating what happened.

The Denver Police Department confirmed the crash in a social media alert posted just before 9 a.m., writing that officers were looking into an incident involving a motorist and a pedestrian that resulted in serious injury, according to a post from the Denver Police Dept. The intersection sits in the heart of Denver’s Ballpark neighborhood, adjacent to Coors Field, where Gate B and designated accessible drop-off zones generate heavy pedestrian traffic during Rockies games and other stadium events, according to MLB.com. Police have not released the pedestrian’s current medical condition, age, or identity, and it remains unclear whether the crash occurred within a marked crosswalk.

A Department Alert Reserved for the Most Severe Crashes

Denver Police only issue public Crash Alerts like this one when at least one person involved suffers serious bodily injury or when the collision forces a road closure, per the department’s own disclosure attached to the alert. That threshold underscores the severity of Sunday’s incident, even though the department has not yet detailed whether the roadway was closed during the investigation or whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses or Coors Field facilities captured the crash. Those questions remain open as the department’s Traffic Investigations Unit continues its work.

The area around 22nd and Blake has also seen recent multi-modal infrastructure changes, including protected bike lanes and dedicated parking stations for bikes and e-scooters installed by the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. That mix of vehicle traffic, cyclists, scooters, and pedestrians funneling toward the ballpark adds complexity to an intersection already known for heavy foot traffic on game days.

Part of a Troubling August Pattern

Sunday’s crash follows a string of serious pedestrian collisions reported across Denver earlier in August, including incidents on Kalamath Street, Peoria Street, and Federal Boulevard, as Hoodline has previously reported. Those cases included a pedestrian hospitalized after a Peoria Street crash and a hit-and-run investigation involving a black Toyota SUV that left another pedestrian badly hurt, with Denver Police and Metro Denver Crime Stoppers seeking public tips in several of them.

Colorado law requires drivers to slow or stop for pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks when signals are absent or not working, under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-802, according to Justia Law. The state’s traffic code also bars drivers from passing a vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross and requires due care to avoid striking pedestrians altogether, according to Harding & Associates, P.C. Investigators typically weigh those statutes when determining fault in serious pedestrian collisions, though Denver Police have not indicated whether citations or charges are being considered in Sunday’s case.

A Record Year for Traffic Deaths

The crash lands against the backdrop of Denver’s deadliest year for traffic fatalities since at least 2013. The city recorded between 93 and 94 traffic deaths in 2025 despite ongoing Vision Zero safety efforts, per ThatCarHitMe.com. Statewide, 126 pedestrians were killed in Colorado traffic collisions last year out of 701 total roadway fatalities, the same data shows.

Denver’s own transportation department has found that roughly half of all local traffic fatalities and serious injuries happen on just 5% of city streets, a concentration officials call the High Injury Network, according to the City and County of Denver. Whether 22nd and Blake falls within that network has not been specified in available data, but the corridor’s heavy pedestrian volume near Coors Field places it among the city’s more complex intersections for mixing cars, cyclists, scooters, and foot traffic.

DENVER PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Pedestrian crashes remain a serious safety problem across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. More than 71,000 pedestrians were also injured.

The problem is significant in Colorado as well. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 120 pedestrians were killed on Colorado roads in 2024. Denver recorded 18 pedestrian fatalities that year, the second-highest total among Colorado counties.

Visibility is an important factor in many pedestrian crashes. CDOT reports that 78 pedestrian fatalities in Colorado occurred when it was dark in 2024, representing 65% of all pedestrian deaths that year.

The longer-term trend also remains concerning. In 2025, the state of Colorado recorded 127 pedestrian fatalities. Between 2020 and 2025, Denver County alone recorded 140 pedestrian deaths, more than any other state county during that period.

Pedestrians have little physical protection when struck by a motor vehicle. Even a collision at a relatively low speed can cause traumatic brain injuries, fractures, spinal injuries, internal injuries, or other life-changing harm.

Common factors that can contribute to pedestrian crashes include:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Failure to yield
  • Unsafe turns
  • Poor visibility
  • Failure to obey traffic signals
  • Drivers failing to watch for pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks
