[10-21-26] Denver Crash at Alameda and Sheridan Sends One to Hospital, Snarls Traffic

A crash involving two motorists at Alameda Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard left one person with serious injuries Monday morning, prompting Denver police to warn drivers to steer clear of the area. The intersection, long flagged by city officials as one of Denver’s more dangerous stretches of road, saw emergency crews respond as traffic backed up in both directions.

What Police Have Confirmed So Far

The Denver Police Dept said in a post that officers are investigating the crash at Alameda and Sheridan, confirming that one person was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The department advised drivers to expect delays in the area and to use alternate routes while the investigation continues. No further details on the cause of the crash, the identities of those involved, or how long the roadway disruptions might last have been released.

Denver police only issue a public Crash Alert when a wreck meets specific criteria. The department’s crash alert disclaimer states that it will only issue a Crash Alert if at least one involved person sustains serious injuries or the crash results in road closures, and notes that residents can review broader traffic crash data through the city’s Open Data Catalog.

A Known Trouble Spot for Drivers and Pedestrians

CBS Colorado reported that Denver police had recorded 64 crashes on the Alameda stretch in the year of its report, including four involving pedestrians. The report also said police had carried out 12 traffic enforcement operations in the area since the start of that year.

DRCOG has studied safety along both roads. Its Sheridan Corridor Safety Study, which wrapped up in February, identified Sheridan as a priority corridor on the region’s High Injury Network. A separate Alameda Avenue Corridor Study identified Alameda and Sheridan as a location of concern.

What the Safety Studies Say

The DRCOG figures available here do not provide a five-year crash total for Alameda and Sheridan specifically. The agency estimated 9,608 fatal or severe-injury crashes across the Denver region from 2020 to 2024, and its Sheridan study counted 92 pedestrian-involved crashes corridor-wide—not at this intersection alone, according to the Denver Regional Council of Governments and its Sheridan Boulevard Corridor Safety Study.

For the Sheridan corridor, DRCOG lists median installation, improvements during repaving, signal timing, sidewalk improvements, and lighting and maintenance among recommendations being considered. The agency’s corridor-wide recommendations do not confirm that these measures have been completed at Alameda and Sheridan.

Push for Safety Upgrades Continues

Denver Public Works has said it is pursuing funding for safety improvements on Alameda from Sheridan to Lipan, according to CBS Colorado. The report also described an earlier deadly crash at the intersection in which a street racer struck a pedestrian crossing Alameda.

Westword has included West Alameda Avenue and South Sheridan Boulevard among Denver’s fatal crash locations and reported that the city’s modern record for annual traffic deaths was 84, set in 2021. Denver police also investigated a fatal crash at the intersection in June 2022; one person was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to a department post on X at the time.

No information has been released connecting Monday’s crash to the corridor’s broader safety history, and police have not said what caused the collision or whether any citations have been issued. Drivers are urged to avoid the area until further notice as the investigation proceeds.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents continue to cause thousands of deaths and serious injuries across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024.

Colorado also continues to see hundreds of traffic deaths each year. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 684 people were killed on Colorado roads in 2024. Of those deaths, 371 involved passenger vehicle occupants.

Denver drivers face additional risks on heavily traveled arterial roads. Corridors such as Colfax Avenue and Federal Boulevard have been identified as part of Denver’s High Injury Network, which includes streets with some of the city’s highest concentrations of fatal and serious-injury crashes.

Car accidents can involve two vehicles, several vehicles, pedestrians, motorcycles, or commercial trucks. Multi-vehicle crashes can become especially complicated because several drivers may share responsibility and multiple insurance policies may apply.

Common factors that can contribute to serious car accidents include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Reckless or aggressive driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Failure to yield
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to obey traffic signals
  • Dangerous weather or road conditions

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash, a Denver car accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine which parties and insurance policies may be responsible.
