DENVER (KDVR) — Portions of Highway 83 and Highway 86 were closed Monday night due to two separate “complex motor vehicle crashes” on Monday evening, according to a social media post from the Fire Protection District.
The Colorado State Patrol provided an update on Monday night that a three-vehicle crash killed five people, with two others being airlifted to a hospital. On Tuesday morning, CSP said the third vehicle was not actually damaged and had stopped just before the crash scene.
The crash involved a black Toyota hatchback, a tan Ford sedan.
CSP said that the Toyota was traveling southbound on Highway 83 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and went off the right shoulder of the road. The vehicle then returned to the road, rolling into the northbound lane and ejecting the driver.
The Ford sedan was traveling northbound when the Toyota hit it head-on.
The Toyota continued traveling southbound in the northbound lanes and struck the Ford pickup, causing minor damage, and the driver received no injuries.
Investigators said that the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the rolling vehicle.
The Ford sedan that was hit head-on was occupied by one adult and five juveniles, all of whom were from Colorado Springs. The driver, an adult man, and three of the juveniles were killed in the crash. The other two juveniles were airlifted to a nearby hospital with no reports on their conditions.
The crash took place around 4:33 p.m. near Highway 83 and South Russellville Road.
The Douglas County Coroner will release the identities of those killed in the crash after the next of kin have been notified.
The Colorado State Patrol’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation and has yet to determine what might have caused the crash.
