[08-18-26] Motorcyclist Crash Shuts Down 6th and Broadway, Injures One in Denver

A crash between a motorist and a motorcyclist shut down all eastbound lanes at 6th and Broadway in Denver on Monday morning, sending one person to the hospital. The Denver Police Department said the collision resulted in serious injury and urged drivers to seek alternate routes while crews worked the scene.

According to the Denver Police Dept., officers are investigating the crash, which occurred in the area of 6th and Broadway and involved a motorist and a motorcyclist. Police confirmed one person was transported to a local hospital following the collision, though the department has not specified whether the injured party was the driver or the rider. It remains unclear whether alcohol, speed, distraction, or an illegal turn played a role in the crash, and that determination is still pending investigation.

The department’s public alert noted that its social media accounts are not monitored 24/7 and directed anyone with an emergency to call 911. Those needing non-emergency police services were told to call 720-913-2000.

Why This Stretch of Broadway Draws Scrutiny

The intersection sits along a stretch of Broadway that the City and County of Denver has designated part of its High Injury Network under the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan — a label given to the roughly 5% of city streets that account for about half of all traffic fatalities and serious injuries citywide. Multi-lane urban arterials like this one, according to Dormer Harpring, consistently see the highest concentrations of severe and multi-vehicle crashes in Denver, largely because heavy commuter traffic and turning lanes create frequent conflict points for drivers and riders alike.

Denver police have made clear that not every crash triggers a public alert. The department only issues a Crash Alert when at least one person involved sustains serious injuries or when the collision forces road closures — a threshold this crash met on both counts. Routine, less severe collisions are logged quietly and can be reviewed through the city’s Open Data Catalog rather than announced publicly.

A Rough Stretch for Denver Traffic Safety

The crash lands amid a grim broader trend. Traffic fatalities in Denver hit 93 in 2025, up from 80 the year before, according to Axios — one of the deadliest years on local roads since the city adopted Vision Zero. Colorado Department of Transportation figures show Denver led all municipalities statewide in 2025 with 76 recorded traffic deaths, a 21% jump over the prior year, as the state overall logged 701 roadway fatalities.

Motorcyclists in particular have borne a disproportionate share of that toll. CDOT reported that motorcyclist deaths across Colorado reached a record 165 in 2024 — nearly 24% of all statewide traffic deaths despite motorcycles making up less than 3% of registered vehicles. The agency has said motorcycle deaths rose 57% between 2015 and 2024, with nearly half of those killed not wearing a helmet.

What Colorado Law Says About Riders and Right-of-Way

Colorado does not require motorcycle operators or passengers 18 and older to wear a helmet, though eye protection is mandatory for all riders regardless of age, per the Colorado State Patrol. That legal landscape matters in personal injury cases, since helmet non-use can factor into comparative fault evaluations under the state’s modified comparative negligence rule.

State lawmakers have also tried to address motorcyclist vulnerability directly. Senate Bill 24-079, which took effect in August 2024, legalized motorcycle lane filtering — allowing riders to pass between stopped vehicles at 15 mph or less — while keeping moving lane splitting illegal, according to CDOT. The measure is part of a three-year pilot program requiring the agency to track sideswipe and rear-end crash data through September 2027.

Distracted driving remains a persistent factor behind Denver-area crashes generally. Anderson Hemmat estimates it contributes to roughly 40% of all reported crashes citywide, with failure to yield and inattentive driving during signal changes frequently cited at multi-lane intersections like 6th and Broadway.

Denver police have not released additional details on the cause of Monday’s crash or the condition of the person hospitalized. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains unresolved whether the injured individual was the driver or the motorcyclist involved in the collision.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle accidents are seldom a minor occurrence. In fact, they are some of the most dangerous types of road accidents. They usually occur at high speeds and result in severe injury or death.

Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable and prone to be ejected from their motorcycle in an accident. According to the NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Guide, motorcyclists are four times more likely to sustain injuries in an accident than other vehicle operators and 29 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle collision than passengers in a car or truck. Common injuries from motorcycle collisions include serious head injuries, back injuries, and broken bones.

Year after year, motorcyclists continue to overrepresent crash fatalities. Motorcycle injuries and accident statistics serve as a sobering reminder for all drivers to use caution. Here is a look at some statistics reflecting motorcycle accidents in the US and Colorado. Based on the information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Colorado’s Motorcycle Operator Safety Training Program (MOST), and KKTV:

  • The US had 5,458 motorcycle fatalities in 2020, a 9% increase from 2019 and the highest number of motorcycle fatalities ever recorded.
  • 2020 was also a record year for motorcycle fatalities in Colorado
  • Colorado observed:
    • 72 motorcycle-related deaths in January-June 2020
    • 59 motorcycle-related deaths in January-June 2021
  • Motorcycle-related crash fatalities account for 17% of all motor vehicle crash casualties in Colorado.
  • 80% of motorcycle crashes result in severe injuries
  • Head-on and rear-end collisions are the most common motorcycle crashes, accounting for 74% of all motorcycle crashes.
  • 63% of motorcycle accident victims were not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred
  • In 2019, Colorado observed 103 motorcyclist fatalities
    • 92 were male
    • 11 were female
    • 93 were motorcycle operators
    • 10 were motorcycle passengers

While they only make up 3% of registered vehicles in Colorado, they account for 23% of traffic fatalities in 2020. Motorcyclists accounted for 137 out of 622 traffic fatalities in Colorado in 2020.

Many different contributing factors can lead to motorcycle accidents. The most common causes are driving under the influence, speeding, lack of proper training, failure to wear a helmet, and driver negligence.
