A pedestrian was rushed to a Denver hospital Monday morning after a driver struck them on the 4900 block of North Kalamath Street and fled the scene, leaving investigators searching for the vehicle and the person behind the wheel. The crash, which occurred in the city’s Chaffee Park and Globeville area, resulted in serious injuries to the victim.

The Denver Police Department said it is investigating the hit-and-run involving a motorist and a pedestrian in the area, according to a statement posted by the Denver Police Dept. One individual was transported to a local hospital following the collision, though the department has not released the victim’s identity, age, or current medical condition.

Monday’s hit-and-run adds to a grim pattern along Kalamath Street. In a fatal hit-and-run Hoodline previously covered, a 19-year-old pedestrian was killed on January 2 at Kalamath Street and West 11th Avenue by a driver estimated to be going 100 mph, according to 9News. Police later arrested a 29-year-old Lakewood driver in that case after tracing vehicle damage leads and public tips, the outlet reported.

Just weeks later, on February 12, a bicyclist was critically injured in a collision with a motorist at 12th Avenue and Kalamath Street, an incident that snarled traffic for hours, according to the Denver Gazette. Community members and urban planners have repeatedly pushed for traffic-calming interventions along the corridor, which functions as a multi-lane north-south arterial carrying heavy traffic near the Interstate 70 and Interstate 25 interchange.

Denver’s Rising Traffic Death Toll

The crash arrives as Denver grapples with its deadliest stretch of roadway fatalities in years. The city recorded 93 traffic deaths in 2025, the highest annual total since Denver adopted its Vision Zero safety plan in 2017 and up from 80 deaths in 2024, according to Axios. The record toll prompted advocacy groups to stage die-in demonstrations at Denver’s City and County Building in March.

Through early August, the city’s Vision Zero tracking had already logged 36 traffic fatalities for the year, per Denver Streets Partnership figures. City transportation data shows that roughly half of all fatal crashes in Denver occur on the city’s designated High Injury Network, a set of arterial corridors that make up just 5% of total street mileage. Regional numbers paint an even starker picture: traffic fatalities and severe injuries across the greater Denver metro area rose more than 30% between 2020 and 2024, resulting in 1,564 deaths and more than 9,500 serious injuries, according to the Denver Regional Council of Governments.

What Happens if the Driver Is Found

If investigators identify the driver who fled Monday’s crash, the case would fall under Colorado’s hit-and-run statute, C.R.S. § 42-4-1601, which makes leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury a Class 4 felony. A conviction can carry two to six years in prison, fines up to $500,000, and mandatory revocation of the driver’s license.
