Scholar athlete! Catcher! Captain! Asshole?
Those are some of the names I was called during my four-year baseball career at Princeton University, just maybe not always in that order!
If you have ever played competitive sports, or even watched a game from the stands, you know that emotions run high. On the field, I was intense. I was demanding. I was the field general. I expected the absolute best from myself and from my teammates. To the opposing team, and sometimes even to my own guys when I was pushing them hard, I might have seemed like a hardass or jerk. But every ounce of that intensity came from a deep passion to win and a total refusal to let my team down.
Baseball is a hardnosed blue collar sport. You have to get dirty. Try taking a 90 mph foul tip to the throat or get hit in the head with a bat on a back swing. When I played, there was no rule about allowing a runner a path to the plate. I blocked that plate with my body every chance I had to prevent a run from scoring. I gave my heart to the sport, much like I have given myself to my clients and my law practice.
Today, I am the President of Denver Personal Injury Lawyers® . I have traded my catcher’s gear for a suit and tie, and the baseball diamond for Colorado courthouses. Instead of playing double headers on the weekends, I am a baseball dad sitting in the stands watching my son play ball.
But let me tell you a secret: I am still the exact same competitor. The fire is still there. I like to win. As a personal injury lawyer practicing across Colorado, I have taken every lesson I learned during those grueling years at Princeton University and applied them to the practice of law.
When you are injured in an auto accident, a truck crash, or an e-bike mishap, you do not want a passive bystander in your corner. You want someone who knows how to lead, how to fight, and how to win. Here is how my journey from the ballfield to the courtroom shapes the way I fight for my clients every single day.

ToggleWork Ethic to Perfect My Craft

Sean catching vs Penn circa 1997
In baseball, nobody becomes a great hitter or an all star catcher overnight. It takes thousands of swings in the batting cages until your hands bleed. It means blocking wild pitches in the dirt until you are bruised and exhausted. I can’t tell you how many seam marks were left on my forearms over the years while blocking pitches in the dirt or taking foul balls. At Princeton, I learned that raw talent is never enough. You have to put in the work when nobody is watching.
I bring that same work ethic to my legal practice at Denver Personal Injury Lawyers®. Personal injury law is incredibly complex. Whether I am handling a serious commercial truck accident on Interstate 70 or a complicated rideshare accident in downtown Denver, I dive deep into the details. Perfecting my craft as an attorney means:
- Studying police reports and accident reconstructions until I understand every single second of the crash.
- Analyzing medical records to truly comprehend the scope of your injuries and what your future recovery will look like.
- Researching insurance policies to find every available dollar to cover your medical bills and lost wages.
Just like I practiced until I could throw a runner out at second base with my eyes closed, I prepare your case so thoroughly that the insurance companies know we mean business.
Leadership From Behind the Plate
As a catcher and the captain of the Princeton baseball team, I had a unique view of the field. The catcher is the only player who faces the entire field and sees everything happening. You are the field general. You are always engaged in the play. You can’t daydream or look into the stands. You are responsible for calling the pitches, positioning the fielders, and watching the pitcher’s mechanics. You have to be a leader under pressure.
When you are dealing with the aftermath of an accident with an injury or death, you need help. You are facing medical bills, dealing with painful physical therapy, and worrying about missed work. You need a leader to step in and take the burden off your shoulders. My job as your attorney is to be the captain of your legal team. I manage the chaos, direct the strategy, and make sure we are always moving forward toward a successful outcome.
The Power of Teamwork
No single player wins a baseball game. The best pitcher in the world cannot win without good defense behind him and runs scored by the batters. Winning requires total teamwork. Everyone has to know their role and execute it perfectly.
At our firm, we view the attorney-client relationship as a true partnership. You are not just a case to us; you are a vital member of the team. You know what happened in the accident and your injuries better than anyone. We rely on our clients to assist us in telling their story. We work hand-in-hand with you, keeping you updated every step of the way. We also build a team to strengthen your claim, including:
- Paralegals help with the strategic management of the claim and serve as a liaison between the clients and the attorneys.
- Legal Assistants keep the files organized with current medical records and bills.
- Investigators help prove fault for the accident and look into personal assets to pursue.
- Accident reconstructionists to prove exactly how the crash happened and who was at fault.
- Medical experts to explain why your injuries require long-term care.
- Economic analysts to calculate the lifetime financial impact of a wrongful death or permanent disability.
Mastering Time Management
Being a student-athlete at an Ivy League university like Princeton University is an incredible balancing act. I had to manage a full load of difficult classes, write papers, and attend hours of daily practices, weight training, and travel games. If I wasted even an hour of my day, my grades or my performance on the field would suffer. I had to learn top-tier time management skills just to survive. For example, having to research and write a 100 page thesis in the middle of the baseball season!
In the legal world, time is of the essence. If you miss medical appointments or don’t get a quick plan of action, your case will suffer. Colorado has strict deadlines, known as the statute of limitations, for filing personal injury lawsuits. Furthermore, evidence can disappear quickly. Skid marks fade from the road, video footage gets erased, and witnesses forget what they saw. Because of my training, our firm moves fast. We manage our caseload efficiently so that your claim is filed correctly, evidence is saved immediately, and your case moves through the system as quickly as possible.
Respect for Rules and the Officials
In baseball, if you argue with the umpire, you get thrown out of the game. You have to respect the rules and the officials, even when a call goes against you. But respecting the umpire does not mean you sit back and let them walk all over you. It means you know the rulebook so well that you can make a calm and reasoned argument when it matters most.
The courtroom operates on strict rules of evidence and procedure. Judges expect attorneys to behave professionally and ethically. Because I learned deep respect for the rules early on, I have built a strong reputation among Colorado judges and opposing attorneys. They know that when Sean McQuaid walks into the room, he is going to be prepared, professional, and honest. That respect gives my clients a massive advantage during negotiations.
Sportsmanship and Compassion
True sportsmanship means treating your opponents with respect while competing as hard as you can. It means having control of your emotions and not slamming your bat or helmet. It means not taunting your opponent with a bat flip. More importantly, it means having deep compassion for your own teammates when they are struggling or in a slump.
I know that if you are reaching out to a personal injury lawyer, you are likely going through one of the hardest times of your life. Whether you were bitten by a dog, injured on an e-scooter, or lost a loved one in a tragic wrongful death accident, you are hurting. I bring that sense of sportsmanship and deep compassion to my clients. I am here to listen to your story, comfort your family, and treat you with the kindness and dignity you deserve. I save my aggressive, hard-nosed intensity for the insurance companies that try to shortchange you.
Unshakeable Responsibility
When you are the captain of a team, you carry the weight of accountability. If the team plays poorly or loses focus, it falls on the leader. You cannot point fingers or make excuses. You step up, take responsibility, and figure out how to fix the problem.
When I take on your personal injury case, I take full responsibility for your well-being. I know that your financial future, your ability to pay for medical care, and your peace of mind depend on the job I do. I do not take that responsibility lightly. I promise to give your case the personal attention it deserves and to fight for you as if you were a member of my own family.
Resilience: Bouncing Back from Failure
Baseball is a game of failure. Even the greatest batters in history fail around 70% of the time. If you strike out, you cannot sit in the dugout and pout. You cannot have bad body language and take that at-bat into the field with you. You have to strap your gear back on, clear your mind, and be ready to make a game-saving play in the next inning. Resilience is everything.
The legal fight against giant insurance corporations is rarely easy. They will try to delay your claim, deny their policyholder’s fault, and offer lowball settlements that do not cover your needs. They want to wear you down until you give up. But they don’t know who they are dealing with. My sports background taught me how to take a hit, shake it off, and come back stronger. If the insurance company refuses to offer a fair settlement, we do not back down. We are resilient, and we are fully prepared to take your case all the way to trial to get you justice.
