[09-07-26] Bicyclist Seriously Hurt in North Broadway Crash

A motorist and a bicyclist collided in the 300 block of North Broadway early Friday, leaving the cyclist with serious injuries and triggering an investigation by Denver Police. The crash is the latest in a string of severe bicycle collisions to hit the city’s streets in recent months.

Denver Police Department confirmed the crash in a post on Denver Police Dept., which described it as a traffic crash with serious injuries involving a motorist and a bicyclist near the 300 block of North Broadway. The department said such crash alerts are only issued when at least one person involved sustains serious injuries or the crash forces road closures.

Denver Police also said that broader traffic crash data can be found through the city’s open data catalog, giving residents a way to track patterns on streets like Broadway over time.

A Corridor Already Under Scrutiny

The North Broadway crash adds to a mounting toll of bicycle collisions across Denver this year. Just two days earlier, Hoodline reported that a driver fled after hitting a cyclist on Montview Boulevard in East Denver, and the day before that, a scooter rider was seriously hurt in a crash on Uptown’s Restaurant Row. Those incidents followed other serious bicyclist crashes in August near Washington Park, on the protected 15th Street bikeway downtown, and at the intersection of 13th and Humboldt, along with hit-and-run crashes near Knox Court and at 8th and Federal.

Broadway itself has seen trouble before. In February, Denver Police investigated another serious bicycle-vehicle crash along the corridor at East Evans Avenue, according to a report from Dormer Harping, LLC, in which EMS rushed an injured cyclist to the hospital. Denver has invested in safety upgrades along parts of Broadway, including a two-way protected bike lane with concrete curb separation between Center Avenue and 7th Avenue, according to Kimley-Horn, but the 300 block of North Broadway sits well north of that stretch.

A Record Year for Traffic Deaths

The North Broadway crash comes amid a grim statewide and citywide backdrop. Colorado traffic deaths climbed to 701 in 2025, with bicyclist fatalities jumping 29% over the prior year to 18 deaths statewide, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Denver itself recorded 93 traffic fatalities on city streets in 2025, a municipal record that topped the previous high of 84 set in 2021, as reported by Westword.

Those numbers have fueled renewed attention on the city’s High Injury Network, the small slice of Denver’s roadways where crashes are concentrated. The Denver Streets Partnership has found that roughly 40% of all traffic fatalities and serious injuries in the city occur on just 5% of its streets. Regionally, the Denver Regional Council of Governments adopted a Vision Zero plan aiming for zero traffic deaths by 2040 after regional fatalities rose more than 30% between 2020 and 2024, totaling 1,564 deaths.

What the Law Says About Sharing the Road

Colorado law spells out specific rules meant to protect cyclists sharing streets with cars. Under the state’s Safety Stop law, bicyclists aged 15 and older may treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs after yielding the right-of-way. Separately, drivers overtaking a bicyclist traveling in the same direction must give at least three feet of clearance or wait behind the cyclist until it is safe to pass.

If a driver flees the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury, Colorado law classifies that as a Class 4 felony, punishable by two to six years in prison and fines up to $500,000. It remains unclear whether the motorist involved in the North Broadway crash remained at the scene, and Denver Police have not released details on fault or citations. Colorado’s modified comparative negligence rule also means an injured cyclist can only recover civil damages if found to be less than 50% at fault for a collision, a standard that often comes into play when responsibility for a crash is disputed.
