[03-22-26] Person on Electric Scooter Injured by Hit-And-Run Driver in Denver

DENVER (KKTV) – A statewide alert has been issued after a driver hit a person riding a scooter and fled the scene.

The hit-and-run collision happened at the intersection of 15th Street and Market Street in downtown Denver at 8:45 Friday night. The victim was riding on an electric scooter when they were hit, suffering serious injuries. The driver kept going and was last seen heading southbound on Auraria Parkway.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a Medina Alert just after midnight Saturday for the suspect. Medina Alerts are issued in hit-and-run crashes when the victim was seriously injured or killed, and law enforcement has substantial information about the suspect’s vehicle, such as a license plate or the make and model of the car.

The suspect vehicle in Friday’s hit-and-run has been described as a black 2018 Nissan Maxima 4D with Colorado license plate CYW-Y89. The vehicle has damage to the driver’s side rear door. The suspect is believed to be a white female with blonde hair, age unknown.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents because riders have little protection when a collision occurs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Motorcyclists accounted for 16% of all traffic fatalities that year.

The risks are especially significant in Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 165 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roads in 2024, the highest number ever recorded in the state. Motorcycle fatalities accounted for nearly one-quarter of all Colorado traffic deaths, even though motorcycles represented only about 3% of registered vehicles.

Colorado also recorded 774 serious bodily injury crashes involving motorcycles in 2024. Of the motorcyclists killed that year, 44% were not wearing a helmet.

Motorcycle deaths declined in 2025, when Colorado recorded 148 fatalities. Even with that decrease, motorcycle crashes remain a significant safety concern across the state.

Denver riders face many of the same risks as motorcyclists throughout Colorado, particularly on busy urban roads and highways. Common factors that can contribute to motorcycle crashes include:

  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Failure to yield
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Drivers failing to see a motorcycle
  • Dangerous road or weather conditions
  • Inexperienced or unsafe riding

Colorado also allows limited motorcycle lane filtering under a law that took effect in 2024. Motorcyclists may pass between vehicles under certain conditions when surrounding traffic is stopped. Lane splitting between moving vehicles remains illegal.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle crash, a Denver motorcycle accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine who may be responsible.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT LAWYERS FOR VICTIMS OF MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS

Our Denver personal injury lawyers represent riders and passengers injured in serious motorcycle crashes. These accidents can lead to extensive medical treatment, lost income, permanent injuries, and significant changes to a person’s daily life.

If another driver or party caused the crash, an injured motorcyclist may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other accident-related losses. Our attorneys can investigate the collision, preserve evidence, communicate with insurance companies, and identify available sources of compensation.

When a motorcycle accident results in the loss of a loved one, eligible family members may also be able to pursue a wrongful death claim. Although compensation cannot undo the loss, a wrongful death case can help families seek accountability and recover damages available under Colorado law.
