A driver struck a pedestrian near East 47th Avenue and North Geneva Street in Denver on Sunday, leaving the victim with serious injuries. Police are investigating the hit-and-run and have not identified the driver or vehicle involved.

A Familiar Investigative Playbook

Denver’s Traffic Investigations Unit typically leans on a mix of tools to track down drivers who flee crash scenes, including anonymous tips, surveillance footage, license plate readers, and collision notifications sent to nearby auto repair shops, according to the Denver Police Department. Those tips are often crucial in cases like this one, where no license plate number was captured at the scene.

Colorado law treats leaving the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury as a Class 4 felony, according to FindLaw, carrying a statutory penalty of two to six years in state prison and mandatory license revocation. Separately, drivers are legally required to stop and yield to pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks, and oncoming vehicles are barred from passing a car that has stopped for one, per Justia Law. Because the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, Colorado’s vulnerable road user statute also gives prosecutors the option to pursue enhanced careless driving charges if the driver is identified.

Montbello’s Place on Denver’s Danger Map

The crash lands in a part of the city that traffic safety data has flagged for years. The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment has found that roughly half of Denver’s traffic fatalities occur on the city’s High Injury Network, a group of streets that make up just 5% of total street miles, according to the department’s findings cited by the Denver Streets Partnership. Local advocacy groups in the neighborhood have long pushed for upgraded crosswalks and traffic calming infrastructure.

The Montbello crash also arrives amid a citywide surge in traffic deaths. Denver recorded 93 traffic fatalities in 2025, its deadliest year since tracking began in 2013, with traffic deaths rising 82% since the city adopted its Vision Zero safety campaign in 2017, per the Denver Gazette. Statewide, pedestrian traffic fatalities reached 127 in 2025, nearly doubling over a ten-year span, according to figures from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Regionally, the picture is just as stark. The Denver Regional Council of Governments has logged an estimated 9,608 fatal or severe-injury crashes across the metro area between 2020 and 2024, resulting in at least 1,564 deaths and more than 9,500 serious injuries. State lawmakers responded this year with Senate Bill 25-281, enacted in June 2025, which elevated careless driving causing serious bodily injury to a Class 1 misdemeanor carrying license suspensions of up to a year.

What Happens Next

If detectives are able to develop a partial plate number or a more specific vehicle description, that could help identify the vehicle. For now, Denver police say they need the public’s help identifying both the driver and the vehicle, and they are directing tips to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers rather than the department’s own non-emergency line, which is not staffed around the clock.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. A recent pedestrian crash was also reported near East 40th Avenue and Kittredge in Gateway.
