A head-on collision was reported Sunday near Riverdale Road in Thornton, injuring four people. The circumstances remain under investigation.

A Road With a Troubled History
The stretch of Riverdale Road where the crash occurred has drawn scrutiny before. Safety improvements have been considered along the corridor. Riverdale Road is a narrow two-lane rural collector with minimal shoulders, according to a county assessment.
The danger isn’t new. In 2017, a single-vehicle crash near 153rd Avenue on Riverdale Road killed a 14-year-old driver and injured three passengers, according to 9News. More recently, Hoodline reported that a head-on collision near East 100th Avenue and Riverdale Road injured four people in August, forcing police to close the road between 100th and 104th avenues for several hours while first responders extricated at least one driver from the wreckage.
Off-Road Vehicles and Pavement Don’t Mix
Riding an ATV on paved public roads carries its own dangers, separate from the roadway’s history.
Colorado law generally restricts where such vehicles can legally operate. Under Colorado Revised Statutes Section 33-14.5-108, it is illegal to ride off-highway vehicles like ATVs on public streets, roads, or highways unless that specific roadway has been designated open for OHV use, according to Justia Law. Violations are classified as civil infractions carrying fines, unless emergency or agricultural exemptions apply.
Thornton’s Push Toward Zero Fatalities
The crash lands amid an ongoing municipal effort to curb roadway deaths across Thornton. The city council adopted the Thornton Vision Zero Action Plan in December 2024, setting a goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2040 after documenting 39 fatal crashes and 228 serious injury crashes citywide between 2017 and 2021. Thornton logs roughly 2,000 motor-vehicle crashes per year across its streets, according to Eddington Law.
Safety upgrades have also been considered along the corridor. Separately, city solicitation records show Thornton opened bidding in 2024 for a multimodal path project along Riverdale Road near 100th Avenue, using federal grant funds to build a concrete path, crosswalk, and ADA ramp upgrades.
