[09-18-26] Motorcyclist Seriously Hurt in Crash on WB I-70 Near Colorado Blvd

A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries early Tuesday in a crash on westbound Interstate 70 near North Colorado Boulevard in Denver, prompting police to warn drivers of delays in the area. The collision, which also involved a motorist, led to delays during the investigation.

The Denver Police Department said it was investigating the crash and that the collision resulted in serious injuries, according to a statement from the Denver Police Dept.

The department noted it only issues public Crash Alerts when a crash causes serious bodily injuries or forces major road closures, a policy that explains why this collision — rather than more routine fender-benders — drew an official advisory. Denver Police directed residents seeking broader traffic crash data to the city’s Open Data Catalog and referred general, non-emergency questions to 720-913-2000.

A Dangerous Interchange With a Recent History

What Recent Safety Reviews Show

The Federal Highway Administration says the Central 70 project redesigned 10 miles of I-70 in Denver, including reconstructed sections and redesigned interchanges intended to improve safety and reduce crashes; construction was completed in July 2023. The Colorado Department of Transportation said in 2019 that a permanent change to southbound Colorado Boulevard access to eastbound I-70 was part of the interchange rebuild and was intended to provide a safer entryway. Neither project history establishes a cause for Tuesday’s crash. A May 2026 City and County of Denver road-safety audit recorded 638 crashes, including 10 serious-injury crashes and no fatal crashes, on Colorado Boulevard between Mississippi Avenue and Iliff Avenue from January 2020 through December 2024. The audit also cautioned that some serious-injury and fatal crashes can be missed when analysts rely on only certain fields in the city’s crash database, so its totals should be read as a documented baseline rather than a complete account of every severe crash.

Colorado Boulevard is part of Denver’s High Injury Network, which identifies streets needing safety improvements because of disproportionately high rates of crashes resulting in death or serious bodily injury, according to the City and County of Denver. The designation provides broader safety context for the area but does not establish what caused Tuesday’s crash.

This is not the first serious motorcycle wreck near this interchange in recent weeks. Hoodline previously reported on a serious motorcycle crash at East 46th Avenue and North Colorado Boulevard in August, and just one day before this latest incident, a motorcyclist was seriously hurt in a separate crash near North Colorado Boulevard and Havana Street. Another crash in August on eastbound I-70 near Havana Street left a motorcyclist seriously injured and shut down highway lanes in northeast Denver, according to the Citizen.

Denver’s Traffic Death Count and a Statewide Motorcycle Crisis

Through mid-September, Denver had recorded 47 traffic fatalities citywide this year, following 93 total traffic deaths across the city in 2025, according to the City and County of Denver Open Data Catalog. The city tracks these numbers as part of its Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate severe traffic injuries by 2030.

The crash also fits into a much larger, statewide pattern. Colorado recorded a record 165 motorcycle fatalities in 2024 — nearly 24% of all traffic deaths that year despite motorcycles making up just 3% of registered vehicles, per the Colorado Department of Transportation. The agency reported that motorcycle fatalities climbed 57% statewide over the ten years ending in 2024. Colorado’s first quarter of 2026 was also one of the deadliest starts to a year for motorcyclists since 2017, with 15 riders killed between January and March, as reported by The Colorado Sun.

Statewide traffic deaths reached 701 in 2025, and an unseasonably warm November and December triggered a 167% late-year surge in motorcycle fatalities even as total motorcycle deaths for the year fell 11% to 147, according to Colorado Politics. State transportation officials have said the warm late-season weather extends riding periods and raises crash risk.

What Colorado Law Says About Helmets and Lane Filtering

Colorado law requires motorcycle helmets only for riders and passengers under 18, under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-1502 — making the state one of a minority without a universal adult helmet mandate, per FindLaw. State law does require eye protection for all riders unless the motorcycle has a windshield. CDOT crash data from 2024 found that 44% of the 165 motorcyclists killed on Colorado roads that year were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, without providing an estimate of helmets’ effect on fatal head injuries.

Separately, Colorado legalized motorcycle lane filtering in 2024 through Senate Bill 24-079, allowing riders to pass stopped vehicles on the left at speeds up to 15 mph, while lane splitting through moving traffic remains illegal. CDOT has said the law was intended to protect stopped motorcyclists from being rear-ended during severe highway gridlock.

Denver Police have not released the identities of those involved or determined a formal cause. It remains unknown whether helmet use, speed or an illegal maneuver played a role in the collision.
