[09-03-24] Aurora Family Without Car After Alleged Hit-And-Run

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A family is without their car, and their tree is damaged after what appears to be a hit-and-run that was caught on camera at an Aurora home.

On Saturday, a doorbell camera video caught a red truck crashing into a tree on Ironton Street, at a home the family said has already been victim to other crimes, including break-ins.

“We came out and we saw the tree knocked down and the car was backing up,” said Norma Escobedo, the daughter of the victims. “He took off, and all the neighbors came out. They were trying to chase him down, but he just was speedy.”

Remnants of the truck could still be seen in the yard Monday afternoon. Escobedo said the truck hit their car as well, likely totaling it, but no one in their household was injured.

“We’re really disappointed. We were scared because we were like, ‘What if we were right here?’ Because my girls usually come and usually play here in the yard. Good thing they were not outside, because you never know what could have happened,” said Escobedo. “At least it’s the tree, at least no one got hurt, no victims you know.”

The Aurora Police Department told FOX31 that the red truck likely has noticeable front-end damage.

“We are thankful that no one was injured in this crash. We hope to identify anyone involved and hold them accountable,” said Agent Matthew Longshore with Aurora police.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents continue to cause thousands of deaths and serious injuries across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024.

Colorado also continues to see hundreds of traffic deaths each year. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 684 people were killed on Colorado roads in 2024. Of those deaths, 371 involved passenger vehicle occupants.

Denver drivers face additional risks on heavily traveled arterial roads. Corridors such as Colfax Avenue and Federal Boulevard have been identified as part of Denver’s High Injury Network, which includes streets with some of the city’s highest concentrations of fatal and serious-injury crashes.

Car accidents can involve two vehicles, several vehicles, pedestrians, motorcycles, or commercial trucks. Multi-vehicle crashes can become especially complicated because several drivers may share responsibility and multiple insurance policies may apply.

Common factors that can contribute to serious car accidents include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Reckless or aggressive driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Failure to yield
  • Wrong-way driving
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to obey traffic signals
  • Dangerous weather or road conditions

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash, a Denver car accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine which parties and insurance policies may be responsible.
