WESTMINSTER, Colo. – A hit-and-run crash triggered a fuel spill and an hours-long closure of the westbound lanes of Hwy 36 on Saturday, said law enforcement, who added that officials are seeking additional leads from the public.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, at around 7 a.m. — three vehicles — a Dodge Challenger, Ford F-150 and a semi-truck were traveling in the same direction on westbound Hwy 36 near Pecos Street. The CSP in a news release said the Challenger, which was in the HOV lane, “crossed two white, solid lines, moving from the HOV lane into the general purpose lane, cutting off both the F150 and the semi.”
During the crash, the F-150 also lost control, “swerved to its right and hit the semi’s left fuel tank with its front right side,”wrote the CSP.
The semi’s damaged fuel tank leaked between 50 and 60 gallons of diesel.
“The F150 then rotated, causing the bed of the pickup to go under the left side of the semi’s trailer and strike the rear left side tires of the trailer with its rear right side of the bed,” continued the CSP, which added that the driver of the Challenger fled the scene as did the driver of the F-150.
“The first-run vehicle is described as an unknown Dodge Challenger. The Dodge Challenger is considered a non-contact vehicle in this crash,” wrote the CSP. “The second-run vehicle is described as a black Ford pickup truck bearing Colorado vanity plate, “CHILANG,” with heavy right front-end damage and damage to the right truck bed. The side of the pickup door has a sticker that says, ‘You can’t fix stupid.'”
As of 2:45 p.m., all lanes were reopened.
