A pre-dawn multi-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 25 just north of Denver left one person dead and two others hospitalized early Saturday, clogging traffic for hours as the morning rush started to build.
The wreck happened in the East 58th Avenue area and drew a heavy response from troopers and local agencies, with northbound lanes shut down while crews worked the scene.
Crash details
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred around 3:42 a.m. when a 2020 Chevrolet Trax struck a 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander.
After that initial collision, the Trax was hit by a 2020 Mercedes-Benz C43 after the Trax’s occupants had stepped outside the vehicle, Denver7 reports.
Multiple emergency units responded and blocked the northbound lanes between East 48th and East 58th avenues while troopers investigated and managed traffic.
Traffic impact
Northbound I-25 was closed for several hours as crews cleared wreckage and assisted the injured.
The Colorado State Patrol posted on X that traffic was being diverted at East 58th Avenue and urged drivers to take alternate routes, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Victims and investigation
A 30-year-old man who had been in the Trax was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead, while a 20-year-old from the same vehicle was hospitalized in serious condition, The Denver Post reports.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 27-year-old man, was also taken to a local hospital, and authorities have not released details on his injuries.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reported that northbound lanes reopened in the morning, and the Adams County coroner’s office said it will release the name of the person who died as the investigation continues.
