[05-26-26] Deadly 96th Avenue Truck Crash Claims 58-Year-Old Pedestrian in Commerce City

A 58-year-old pedestrian struck by a truck on East 96th Avenue in Commerce City has died after being hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. Emergency crews shut down E. 96th Avenue between Chambers Road and Buckley Road while medics treated the victim and investigators documented the crash scene. The death was confirmed after the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital and later died over the weekend.

Police update and investigation

According to the Commerce City Police Department, the truck driver stayed at the scene, spoke with officers, and is cooperating with the investigation. Police said the driver will not be cited or face any charges. The CCPD Traffic Team is handling the truck and pedestrian collision, and officers urged drivers to steer clear of the area while the lanes were closed during the initial response and early stages of the investigation.

Where the crash happened

The collision occurred along a stretch of E. 96th Avenue that is currently under construction as part of a city widening project that will add travel lanes, sidewalks, and multi‑use paths between Chambers Road and Tower Road. The project page for the corridor describes phased lane closures and traffic signal work that have shifted how vehicles move through the area while crews finish the Second Creek bridge and other upgrades, as per the E. 96th Avenue Widening Project.

Pedestrian safety in Colorado

Statewide numbers put the tragedy in a wider context. In a 2024 update, the Colorado Department of Transportation reported 47 pedestrian deaths in the first half of that year and stressed that crashes are not random events and can be prevented. The agency highlights infrastructure improvements, traffic enforcement, and safer driver behavior as key tools to bring those numbers down.

What’s next

CCPD says its Traffic Team is continuing to investigate as the department collects evidence and prepares a full report on the fatal collision. For now, the department’s Facebook post is the main public account of what happened, and officials say they will release additional details as they are able to share them, according to the Commerce City Police Department.

DENVER TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS

Colorado’s roads, by nature, are considered far more dangerous than most of the country. The mountains offer challenges to trucks that require slowing techniques that prevent smoking brakes.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has built 13 runaway truck ramps on mountains, mostly on I-70. The most used is on the descent from the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels to Silverthorne.

There have been continuous calls to improve the state’s trucking routes, amongst bigger calls for improved driver standards.
