[09-03-26] Motorist Strikes Pedestrian at Dartmouth and Colgate, Southwest Denver Braces for Delays

A motorist and a pedestrian collided at the intersection of West Dartmouth Avenue and West Colgate Drive in Southwest Denver overnight, leaving one person with serious injuries and forcing officers to warn drivers of delays throughout the area. The crash was reported early Tuesday, and one individual was transported to a local hospital following the collision.

Denver Police announced the investigation in a Crash Alert posted to social media, according to the Denver Police Dept. The department only issues these public alerts when a crash involves serious bodily injury to at least one person or forces a full road closure, since its social accounts are not staffed around the clock; anyone with information about an active emergency is still directed to call or text 911. The alert did not specify whether the pedestrian was crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk, and that detail remains unknown as the investigation continues.

The intersection sits in the Bear Valley and Harvey Park South area of Southwest Denver, within City Council District 2, a stretch of residential corridors far from downtown’s busier commercial strips. It is also not far from East Dartmouth Avenue, a street that has drawn prior Denver Police attention in an unrelated case involving a still-unsolved shooting, according to Hoodline’s earlier report on the Kennedy Complex shooting.

A Pattern of Serious Crashes Across Denver

Tuesday’s collision is at least the fourth serious auto-pedestrian crash Hoodline has covered across Denver in recent weeks. Earlier in August, a pedestrian was seriously hurt in a crash on Federal Boulevard, a corridor Hoodline described as one of the city’s most dangerous in its report on the Federal Boulevard crash. Days later, a pedestrian was hospitalized after being struck on Peoria Street in Montbello, and a separate crash injured a pedestrian along the Kalamath Street corridor for the third time in a matter of weeks, per Hoodline’s coverage of the Kalamath Street incidents.

That pattern tracks with citywide numbers. Denver recorded 93 traffic fatalities in 2025, its deadliest year on record since at least 2013, up from 80 deaths in 2024, according to Axios. Pedestrian deaths drove much of that increase, surging 50% year-over-year with 25 pedestrians killed in 2025 compared to 16 the year before, as reported by Colorado Politics.

Why Certain Streets Keep Producing Severe Crashes

City transportation officials have identified a small share of streets as disproportionately dangerous. Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has designated a High Injury Network that accounts for roughly half of all traffic fatalities while making up just 5% of city streets, according to the Denver Streets Partnership. Arterial roads built for higher vehicle speeds are believed to drive a disproportionate share of the city’s most severe crashes.

The trend is not confined to Denver proper. Across the nine-county Denver region, traffic fatalities rose more than 30% between 2020 and 2024, prompting regional planners at the Denver Regional Council of Governments to set a goal of zero traffic deaths by 2040. The city has responded with its SPEED safety program, which deploys automated speed enforcement cameras, electronic feedback signage, and signal timing adjustments through 2026 in an effort to slow vehicles on the most dangerous corridors.

What Colorado Law Requires of Drivers

Colorado law places clear obligations on motorists approaching pedestrians in the roadway. Under Colorado Revised Statutes § 42-4-802, drivers must yield the right-of-way and slow or stop completely for pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections, according to Justia. Unmarked crosswalks exist by default at sidewalk connections across most street corners, meaning the crossing does not need painted lines to carry legal protection.

State law also addresses one of the more common causes of severe crosswalk strikes: § 42-4-802(4) explicitly bars drivers approaching from the rear from overtaking or passing a vehicle that has already stopped at a crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross, per FindLaw. Denver’s own municipal code reinforces those protections; Denver Revised Municipal Code Section 54-538 gives Denver Police local citation authority to penalize drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians on their side of the street, according to the Amy G Injury Firm.

Denver Police have not said whether speed or impairment played a role in Tuesday’s crash, and it remains unclear whether the department’s Traffic Investigations Unit will pursue citations or criminal charges once its investigation concludes.
